Trump in Politics

The latest LA Times/USC Nationwide Tracking poll has Donald Trump ahead of Hillary Clinton by six points! Maybe that poll is an outlier, a blip, mistaken in some way. And yet it’s not terribly out of step with other general election polls that have Trump ahead, even, or just a little behind.

Sure, polls go up and down during a race, and maybe Trump’s lead will evaporate now that Clinton is back on the campaign trail, demonstrating that her collapse at the 9-11 event was not as serious as it seemed.

Most of the attention paid to Donald Trump’s appearance in Florida this week was on his comments about taking the guns away from Hillary Clinton’s security detail, but there were substantive issues under discussion as well. Overlooked in most of the cable news feeding frenzy was Trump’s suggestion that the current White House policy regarding Cuba wasn’t working and would need a fresh look. (NBC News)

The Republican nominee also shifted his policy on Cuba Friday, telling the Miami crowd that cheered when he asked how many of them were Cuban that he would reverse Obama’s orders on Cuba “unless the Castro regime meets our demands.”

“Those demands will include religious and political freedom for the Cuban people and the freeing of political prisoners, the freeing of political prisoners,” Trump outlined. Then, polling the crowd on his just laid out policy, Trump asked, “Right? Am I — is that right?” The crowd cheered.

Trump, who has been known to add spontaneous riffs into his prepared remarks, took it upon himself to add the caveat of freeing political prisoners to his list of demands from Cuba in order to keep diplomatic relations open.

Vice News reports that one of its journalists, Alex Thompson, was arrested outside a Donald Trump campaign event in Houston on Saturday after inquiring about a media credential.

Thompson had previously applied for a credential to the event — a luncheon for families with relatives killed by undocumented immigrants — and was told by the Trump campaign that his application was pending, according to Vice. Thompson, hoping to cover the luncheon at the Omni Houston Hotel at Westside, showed up to inquire about the campaign's decision.

Gold Star father Khizr Khan, whose rebuke of Donald Trump at the Democratic National Convention was colorfully criticized by the candidate and his supporters, is helping to raise money for the Virginia Democrats in order to "help defeat Donald Trump."

Donald Trump, who has made a hardline stance on immigration a centerpiece of his presidential campaign, asserted Saturday that "not one more American life should be given up in the name of open borders."

"All across this country, dining room tables have an empty seat because the government abandoned its duty and has not enforced its basic laws," Trump told a gathering of the Remembrance Project, a group founded to remember those killed by people living illegally in the U.S. and to press for tougher laws. "This has to end. This will end if I become president."

After cutting into Hillary Clinton’s lead in recent weeks, Donald Trump seemed to turn into his old self again by inciting a series of controversies.

He insulted a black pastor, called for Clinton’s bodyguards to be disarmed and angered the media with a publicity stunt that was meant to walk back the “birther” conspiracy he had peddled for years.

It remains to be seen how the week’s events will affect his standing in the polls, but they will surely be the topic of discussion on the Sunday circuit.
